The LeFlore County Museum at Hotel Lowrey has 25 plus rooms of artifacts. Most of them are on the second and third floors of the hotel. The first floor has two revolving exhibit rooms. It is the LeFlore County Historical Society's goal to bring exhibits of interest to the community. We have had several local artists exhibits which proved to be a success with visitors.
The second floor houses a new Veteran's Room sponsored in memory of Jerry Jenson. The artifacts in this room begin with the civil war and end with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. This is one room you don't want to miss.
Also, on the second floor is the Poteau Alumni Room plus the President's room emphasizing John F. Kennedy's visit to the area in 1961, and the "ghost" room as well as two rooms set up as a hotel room and an office.
The third floor houses most of the artifacts. There are artifacts from the Spiro Mound Indians, Runestones from Poteau, Shawnee and Warner, OK. There is also a large collection of other Native American Indian tribes. There are many artifacts from the coal industry, railroads, fossils of the area....there are too many items to list. You will not be disappointed with your visit. Come to see how the residents of LeFlore County lived in the past.
Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 11 to 3.
Tours are available upon request.
